The Veterans vs Under Rated FC

Under Rated just about managed to avoid being thrown into the lions den of the top division, and instead will attempt to make their own way there by picking up promotion from the Championship. The Veterans came close to a top two finish last season, and would be keen to show that last season wasn’t a flash in the pan.

When Stuart Carter opened the scoring for Under Rated in the second minute, there were thoughts of a comfortable opening night win, but The Veterans proved a tough prospect for all teams last season and weren’t going to lie down and have their belly tickled. Two goals from Ben Mercer gave the Veterans a 2-1 lead before we’d reached the 10 minute mark, and Sam Collicott made that 3-1 half way through the period. Under Rated slightly scraped over the line towards the end of the League One season, but they fought back and were level by the break when Steven Batho scored twice in the last three minutes of the half.

Carter got a goal in the opening minute of the second half as the second period started in similar fashion to the first, and as with the first half The Veterans hit back again as Dean Minshull levelled things up again 5 minutes later, before putting them in front with 12 minutes left. The Under Rated response was more immediate this time as Batho got his third a minute later, before they ran away with it in the final 5 minutes. Colin Stelfox made it 6-5 5 minutes from time, before two more Batho goals and one more each for Carter and Stelfox gave Under Rated an opening day win by a scoreline that could be considered to be slightly flattering.

SFC Club vs Deportivo Lack Of Talent

SFC Club went into the first night of their first full Sunday league season off the back of an improved performance against Inter Your Sister last week, and faced a Deportivo Lack Of Talent team who were dropping into the 4th tier for the first time after a real struggle in a strong League One last season.

They will be keen to bounce back at the first attempt and Rob Parker put them in front in the second minute. For a while SFC Club didn’t read the script, and they turned it around to lead after 10 minutes as Luke Ashworth and Matty Aked scored, but that lead also didn’t last long as Josh Jackson made it Desmond. Parker put Deportivo back in front 9 minutes before the break, but again the Clubbers got themselves level through Ashworth’s second. Deportivo edged themselves in front at the break through Rhys Moult’s goal, and we looked set for a closely fought opening game of the season.

After a tight opening 10 minutes to the second period, three goals in 4 minutes put Deportivo well in control, Brad Peet, Parker and Moult with the goals. Aked got his second to give SFC a glimmer of hope, but that was extinguished by two more goals in the final 10 minutes from Peet and Parker to ease Deportivo to an opening night win.

SK Dons vs Inter Row Z

Inter Row Z became another team who’ve chosen to double up across a couple of league nights as they added Sunday to their current Tuesday side. In a tricky first game to call, they took on SK Dons, fresh from their second placed finish in League Two last season.

The newer side struck first as Ray Donnelly scored their first Sunday league goal in the second minute, but the Dons drew themselves level after 8 minutes as Kyle Norris grabbed himself a goal. Inter regained control and scored two goals in the final stages of the half through Donnelly and Jamie Kealey to go into the break 3-1 up.

This remained the score as we headed towards the final 10 minutes, but two goals in three minutes from Jack McDonagh and Donnelly put the result to bed for Inter. Donnelly added a further couple of goals and Kealey another of his own as the score line took on a slightly unfair look in the final 5 minutes, but Inter pick up a first Sunday league win.

Inter Your Sister vs Stockport Eagles

Inter Your Sister were sporting some sharp looking new shirts for their opening game in the bottom tier after what has been a dramatic fall from the top division in consecutive seasons. Maybe the new shirts will bring about a change in fortune, but would that start with an opening night win over Stockport Eagles, who might fancy themselves for a promotion push this season?

4 first half goals were crammed into 10 minutes in the middle of the period, with Ryan McAndrew’s 11th minute opener being wiped out by Matt Kealy’s leveller a minute later. Michael Winn quickly restored the Eagles lead, and it was 3-1 at the break when Alecs Patterson scored 5 minutes from the interval.

Inter needed a quck start to the second half and they got it through Gaz Sumner’s goal two minutes after the break, but that was quickly followed by a couple more Winn goals to ease the Eagles three goals ahead. Sumner grabbed a second and Simon Steel also got a goal to bring it back to 5-4 again with 14 minutes still to play, but Winn and McAndrew grabbed a couple of quick goals to end the Inter resistance as the Eagles soar to a first win of the season. At least Inter have nice shirts…..

Pathetico Madrid (Sun) vs FC Stront Bakken

We welcomed the Bucket Boys back to the Sunday league as they attempt to reignite the form that saw them climb to the Championship on their last spell with us. That season didn’t go well…… This they faced an old foe in a Pathetico Madrid team missing several regulars, but bringing some familiar faces in to replace them.

Norton’s Adam and James both scored in the opening 10 minutes to get Pathetico off to a good start, and an otherwise tight first half just saw another goal from Adam three minutes before the break to see Pathetico lead 3-0 at the interval.

Danny Norton scored an absolute worldy (he says) three minutes after the break, and Pathetico were home and hosed on opening night. Ashley Ellis-Quirke pulled one back for Stront Bakken 9 minutes from time, but it was too little, too late, and Pathetico get thre points on the board early doors.

J Stands Barmy Army vs Kipsta Cobras
