Recap
With 6 teams lined up for a weekly game, the Wednesday league got underway with a pair of games on the opening night. Stockport Eagles have been with us a while, and have been doubling up their Sunday league position by taking part in the Wednesday pre-season games for the last few weeks. Magpie FC were here for just their second week, having lost their only pre-season game to Polish Army last week.
One player from each team will not have enjoyed the opening 10 minutes to their Wednesday league season, as an own goal from each side made it 1-1 in the early stages. Magpie took control with a spell of three goals in 6 minutes, two from Robert Starczewski and the other from Nicula Alexandru, but the Eagles hit back before the break through Ben Waugh to make it a two goal game at the break.
Magpie restored their three goal lead 4 minutes into the second half when Jacek Nowojewski scored to make it 5-2, but Waugh’s second dragged the Eagles back into it again. Starczewski’s third of the game 14 minutes from time was the decisive moment, and Magpie finished the stronger team as further goals from Alexandru and Nowojewski completed the scoring to give Magpie an opening night win.
