We welcomed the imaginatively named Ruud van Ni-Ste-Lloyd to the Wednesday league this week, and their opening night task was to take on a Magpie team who were two from two at the start of the first Wednesday season.

Despite getting off to a decent start, the new boys fell behind after 7 minutes when Nicula Alexandru scored to put Magpie in front, and despite creating a number of chances to get themselves level they were two down 8 minutes before the break when Robert Starczewski fired in from a narrow angle. Ian Davies claimed the honour of scoring the new teams first goal on 20 minutes, and some questionable defending allowed him to make it 2-2 a minute later.

The Ruud boys started the second half the better team having taken a little time to settle to Ballers life, and they looked to have cracked it when Matt Barton and Jamie Longworth scored within a minute of each other to give them a two goal lead with 19 minutes to play. Alexandru got his second with 9 minutes remaining, and then out of nowhere Magpie were level when the same player completed his hat trick a minute later and it was game on again. Davies’ third of the game for van Ni-Ste-Lloyd was the 9th and final goal of the game to give the new team a win on their opening night. And given the choice of team name, there was no Ste Lloyd in sight……..
